NFC evolution and user experience

One evident pre-requisite for mass-market roll-out is consumer appeal. Not only will services based on NFC technology make people’s lives easier and more convenient, they also need to be easy to use, manage and get access to. To fully satisfy the consumer needs, a variety of services such as paying with mobile phone for your coffee or accessing a bus just by tapping the reader terminal with your mobile phone provide extra value for everyday life. As downloading the application securely and easily into the consumer’s mobile phone is part of the service experience Venyon works in cooperation with other stakeholders in fulfilling these requirements.

The logistic chain of downloading a virtual smart card to an NFC mobile phones needs an entirely new delivery concept: over the air. The process of consumers buying mobile phones will remain the same. The process of retrieving smart card applications into the mobile phone has started a new era. In the mobile environment physical cards do not exist, but instead virtual cards in the form of applications and data are transmitted to over the mobile networks directly into the mobile phone and secure element in consumer hands. Depending on the application, marketing activities, business models, chosen handset and secure element, some of the applications may be also pre-installed and for example only personalization (card holder name, PIN codes etc.) performed after the NFC mobile handset is released to the consumer. Over time, dynamic management of different applications will become more commonplace as technologies and also business relationships become more mature. Services offered also by TSM will follow this evolution.

NFC will enable numerous yet even unknown services over time, but already now there are huge possibilities to offer new exciting and beneficial services to consumers. It is important to keep the clear focus on objectives and allocate time and resources for user-acceptance of the first applications and services. Intuitiveness is one of the great advantages NFC brings, but consumers need guidance also from all stakeholders so that the mass-market will adopt these new services. User-friendliness is one of the key drivers here and Venyon concentrates on implementing easy to use, but secure provisioning services now and in the future.
