For enabling consumers to use applications such as payment, transit tickets and loyalty with their mobile phone these applications must be provisioned to the consumer’s NFC phones. As mobile phones are always online through wireless networks, a consumer-friendly and effective way for the application distribution is Over-the-Air (OTA) channel. Over-the-Air provisioning is an important part of the NFC ecosystem as it allows remote
- Download of NFC applications
- Personalization of applications
- Life-cycle management
- Other value added services such as top-up
Since consumers can opt for NFC applications anytime after they have purchased NFC-enabled mobile phone and have e.g. NFC-enabled SIM card from the mobile operator, OTA provides user-friendly distribution channel. Using OTA removes the need for consumer to visit any outlet, but services can be enabled anywhere at anytime.
Many of the NFC applications and services are confidential in nature and require proper security over the whole life-cycle including OTA provisioning. Portability and openness are also of fundamental importance for the secure, but user-friendly Over-the-Air provisioning services.
